Social media what is it? What is the purpose are of social media? We are using to garnering information but for what reason? sometimes we lose what the purpose is that we are striving for. The gathering of information is overwhelming and can eat up all your time away from the things that have to be done in a day.
Social media is a bit of a blank canvas. Transitory nature of the social media guarantees change is constant, more so than life itself or maybe more dramatically. Social media is the wild west of technology; no one knows what is going on and where the changes are going to be. What is true today will be totally different tomorrow, hang on to your horse and ride it through. The new hardware that is coming available will allow even more abilities to access communication and information. We have not begun to see the changes it will create for publishing. Already there are small changes moving consumers away from the paper book as well as how newspapers will be serving people, these changes are promised to grow substantially in the future. Laptop is going to be vanishing in the next few years, it will likely a cell/iphone which will be change by technology to be even more information accessible.
The one down side is the more of this social media stuff is created, the more it will continue to possibly erode Regional Directors as well as people, from being involved with each other socially. We are becoming more aware that kids are not talking to each other is disturbing trend that is becoming a common trend. A Director sat in a coffee shop for 2 hours; watched a group of boys around a table not say 2 words to each other, the whole time. They were twittering, facebooking, emailing and texting each other; he suspected. The present social media is like a social fetish and people can lose the critical social bond. As People we are hard wired for social contact and the need for contact is necessary the speakers thought the physical contact will swing back, eventually. Control and a balance of this information over load has to be made; in families, regional districts and for yourselves. Social Media is No substitute for what is happening in your community, it is not a reality, and there is no replacement of meeting people face to face. There may be big problems with all the dependency on social media. What if the internet was cut off? This is not so farfetched with electricity shut downs or massive solar flares interrupting or shutting reception. Neither problem is that farfetched nor what are societies back up plan, if the internet was cut off. What do we/you do to communicate? As we are losing these other methods over time, of communicating with each other.
Using social media in the CSRD? Do we have a policy to respond to social media being used as an information giver or taker? And is it a are the dangers to CSRD from social media? RDs have to choose; how you can deal with it, it is dependent on what you know and how comfortable you with social media.
One of the last bit of information the speakers left us with is:
Remember as soon as you hit POST it is no longer yours, and you cannot take it back….
And with that I will hit…POST
